Brahminy Foundation - Supporting young people at risk

At Brahminy in the Northern Territory, they have developed a framework for practice, in the care and support of all young people “at risk”.  There is no other Youth Facility like Brahminy in Australia.

The Brahminy Experience (delivered through its programs) is designed to provide the participants with the capabilities to address and deal with issues that may impact on them in their respective lives, now and in the future. This is achieved by working towards such issues that include:
  • Family reconciliation
  • Recognition of consequences of anti social and illegal activities
  • Employability
  • Access to enhanced literacy and numeracy skills
  • Providing  meaningful and enjoyable experiences
  • Day to day living skills
  • Interpersonal relationships and social integration
  • Alcohol and other drug counselling
  • Self esteem, and
  • Empowerment.

In short, the aims and objectives of The Brahminy Experience are as much as possible to empower the young people to make rational life choices, now and in the future, and to accept the consequences of those choices, be they positive or negative. This is done by providing a support programme in a unique “Wilderness environment”- The Brahminy Experience.

The Brahminy Group is also very unique in that it utilises and engages Aboriginal culture and techniques, utilising over 40,000 years of life experience and connection to the earth. Aboriginal Culture is well renowned for it's peacefulness and harmony.

changeTomorrow was deeply touched by the program aired on ABC in May 2011 which gave us an insight to The Brahminy Group and the children for which they are trying to help. It was clear from the program that the children were at the last crossroad of there lives, one road leads to despair and one that leads to hope, The Brahminy Group and in particular Allan Brahminy are doing all they can to show these kids the light and the hope.
